My last book on the FBI, Broken, “broke off” after 9/11, and covered the Directorship of Louis Freeh and his predecessors, going back to Hoover. I was interested in how the culture of the FBI, as it developed, particularly after Hoover’s death, led the Bureau to its massive failures investigating the 9/11 conspirators, a conspiracy it could and should have prevented. What we need now is to understand how its culture since Freeh led the Bureau under James Comey to its catastrophic mistakes during the 2016 election. Comey  was guilty of colossally bad judgment in his handling of the Russian collusion and Clinton email investigations, mistakes that have made the Bureau distrusted by both major parties. How and why did he inject the Bureau into the center of electoral politics, something all other Directors avoided at all costs?  There is a real FBI story.
